En l’an 3 de l’ère Bunkyū (1863 après J. C), soit un an avant les évènements de Hakuōki Shinsengumi Kitan (Saison 1), le Shinsengumi alors appelé Rōshigumi arrive à Kyoto.
Serizawa Kanto, le capitaine de la troupe du Mito sauve la vie de Ibiki Ryunosuke, un jeune garçon fils d’un samourai qui fut attaqué par des Ronins et laissé pour mort.
Une fois guérit, il décide de partir sans remercier personne.
Pour s’acquitter de sa dette, Ryunosuke deviendra le serviteur de Kanto, son sauveur.
Ryunosuke fera la rencontre de nos héros au fur et à mesure…
